I am a huge needlepointer of ornaments and stockings. Ijust purchased a needlepoint rug kit and don’t know how to hold it and my stitches don’t look very good. Should I purchase a frame? If so, the rug is 5′X8′, what do you recommend? Regarding the stitches, should I use a U shaped needle and only work on one side?

There are rug frames, but I’ve never used one. I do know people who have and they like them. I don’t know of many shops who carry them, but here is one with one listed on their site, http://www.a-z-needlepoint.com.

Unless the piece is finished (so you can’t get at the back, there is no need to use a u-shaped needle.

I am a beginning needlepointer and have just purchased a canvas that is approximately 11×14. I plan on framing the picture for my grandaughter. The woman at the needlepoint store said I didn’t need to put it in a frame to stitch it but I hear needlepoint canvases stretch badly. What is your opinion? Please help…
    Thank you!!!

    Teresa –

Canvas doesn’t stretch, though while you stitch the sizing that makes the canvas stiff relaxes and the canvas sags, making it soft, very flexible, and harder to stitch. What does happen that is a problem is that canvas distorts as it’s stitched so that it’s no longer square.

The amount needlepoint distorts depends on many things: the size of the piece, the canvas it’s on, the stitches you do, and your tension.

Although you can do needlepoint without it being stretched on stretcher bars or a frame, your work will look better, be easier to finish, and be easier on your hands when stitching if you put it on stretcher bars.

Use stretcher bars, not a hoop. Hoops don’t keep the heavy needlepoint tight enough and squash down the stitching. Also there usually isn’t enough margin on needlepoint canvas for a frame to work.

That’s a great gift you are making for your granddaughter.

Where’s the best place to inquire about a needlepoint pattern? I’m trying to locate a pattern from a finished piece I saw in a furniture consignment store (but unfortunately, didn’t purchase). It’s a gorgeous pice with shorebirds on the beach. I’ve looked everywhere, but have been unable to locate a pattern, name, designer, manufacturer, or any information whatsoever about it. I have a couple of photos of the finished piece that I snapped with my phone for anyone who can help.

    Thanks!

Have a needlepoint pillow chart that I would like to do but not sure the how to do the or is there a way to transfer the picture on to canvas. Have tried but got lose some where in the chart and just stopped.

If it’s a chart like a counted cross stitch chart, then you pretty much either have to put it on block by block or make basting lines on your needlepoin every ten threads, so that you have a grid that matches the blocks on the chart.

This is because the scale of your chart and the scale of the canvas won’t match.

However if you have some kind of outline or line drawing of the design, then you can transfer that by placing it under the canvas and tracing the lines using a Pigma Micron marker. Then you just fill in the spaces from the chart.
