Blog Stitching — Starting a Project

london needlepoint canvas from Amanda Lawford

I’ve been a good girl and I’ve managed tyo make a bit of a dent in the UFO pile, have stitched some new projects, and generally gotten more of my to do pile done. And California is having and El Nino winter and so it rains. Lots. To top it all off, here on Mare Island, we have what I call “san Francisco with wind” weather. Add wind, as in knocking small trees down wind, to the rain and I need something new.

So I’m going to take an idea from Spinster Stitcher and Jane of Chilly Hollow and bog stitch a canvas from my stash. I’ll have occasional posts about it, so you can learn how I approach the project and maybe even stitch along with me. But I want you to help me decide which to stitch.

The first candidate, pictured above, is an Amanda Lawford canvas of London. I lie it because it’s small and I love the sky.

The second is this stocking I bought on eBay. I don’t need another Christmas stcoking, but it’s a nativity and I’ve always wanted to do one.

I love the shaded sky. I also love that I will be able to do many different stitches and use lots of threads from my stash for it.

Finally there is this Charley Harper piece. It’s in between the other two in size. My DD loves Charley Harper as much as I do and so this will be a pillow for her.

I like it because it’s a classic design of his and has many of his signature elements. I think it can have some cool stitches. On the downside, there will be lots of background.

Add your comments by Feb 6, I want to start this during the Super Bowl. One commenter, picked at random, will win a prize.

I vote for the Amanda Lawford. I think there is a lot of texture and color there for a small piece. It’s a great way to use up stash threads and will give you a quicker finish than the others. But actually, all of them are lovely, so I will follow along no matter what is chosen.

All projects would be beautiful and satisfying!! And the prospect of beginning something new is all the fire I need to complete an older project I had once lost interest in.

All designers in their own way deserve our vote. I love the London scene; and Christmas scenes are refreshing all year long. However, the Charley Harper design gets my vote. Reason – Super Bowl and the horse shoe represents our Super-Bowl-bound Indianapolis Colts. Need I say more? Go Colts and thanks Charley Harper for the good luck. My final vote is for Charley Harper’s work.

My vote is for the Charlie Harper. Edie Harper, a family memeber, recently passed away. Charlie as well as Edie and other Harper family memebers have had their work memorialized in needlepoint canvases. So a great choice!

I love all three projects but my first choice would be Amanda Lawford as she is one of my favorite designers. I love all the different things you can do with one of her canvas’–sky texture, buildings, clouds, etc. Plus it is small so when it is finished you can go on to one of the other two pieces. Have fun deciding and happy stitching.

Hi Janet–Of these three, the Amanda Lawford canvas is the one I would pick. I love its whimsical nature. I’m not sure I would have identified it as London, but once you mentioned that, it was clear that it is London. I also see lots more opportunities for fun, textural stitches in that canvas.

I vote for Charley Harper. Like them all but for starting on super bowl day the horseshoe and ladybug larger design while watching the game.

I like the Amanda Lawford canvas. The small areas of stitching should work up fast and you can then be on to another canvas. If you decide on the Charley Harper canvas, you can do a light background stitch and put color lining behind it.

The weather in the S. F. Bay Area is wet and windy, but I do believe you get a north wind, especially in the afternoon, on Mare Island. At least you get more sunshine than I do.

I vote for the Amanda Lawford canvas. I’d love to see how you handle the smaller areas as I always have problems with the small areas. It’s a beautiful and fun canvas too.

I vote for the Nativity Stocking! Unfortunately the holidays will be here before you know it.

Janet, I vote for the Amanda Lawford, London canvas. Love Big Ben and the sky and clouds, plus that bit of a double-decker bus is a great touch. I love the Charlie Harper canvas too, but I think the London canvas will be more fun to watch you blog stitch. I fear though, that you will ‘enable’ me to buy this canvas once I see what you do with it!

I love the cheerfullness of the Charley Harper, especially with the rainy weather, I think its a great feel good piece. So it gets my vote.

Hands down – the Amanda Lawford. I’d love to see you blog stitch that one. It’s got such interesting architectural features. The Charlie Harper is lovely, but not as interesting. The stocking looks like a six-month effort (for me). So Lawford is my choice.
