Here’s a portrait of the average needlepointer:

You make about 13 projects per year
About 1/3 of your projects use materials from your stash
You spend between $600 and $800 on materials for all your projects, about 30% more than cross stitchers and knitters, and about twice ass much as crocheters
You spend about $100 less on needlepoint than you did three years ago
You spend about $500 on classes and education
The projects your prefer to make are pillows, Christmas items, ornaments or stockings (listed in order of popularity
2/3 of your purchases come from specialty needlework stores (on-line and off)
30% of your spending is for threads and another 30% for canvas (I assume this includes painted canvases)
Needlepointers spend a slightly higher percentage of their purchases on finishing than cross stitchers and significantly more than knitters (who don’t spend money here and crocheters, who spend little
Only about 5% of your spending is on book and magazines

There is also a wholesale portion of the survey and it has some good news for us as stitchers. The revenue for needlepoint sales has grown, unlike knitting shops. The number of shops has stayed the same, and almost 80% of them have a website of some kind. About 40% of stores have both a physical and an Internet store.

If you like trunk shows and classes, retailers found them the most effective way to bring people into shops, so there should be more of them in the future. Needlepoint retailers want more new and fresh canvases to sell, so let’s hope that brings more innovation.

On the designer/manufacturer side, the market is profitable, with needlepoint the second biggest segment of the market, after knitting. What does that mean to you as a stitcher? A profitable wholesale market means that people with fresh new ideas will look at and enter this market, meaning more cool things for us to stitch.

These results are from The State of Specialty NeedleArts 2010, a survey done by TNNA (a trade organization) earlier this year and just released. What Kind of Needlepoint Club Would You Like to See? (now revised)

I’ve been thinking about offering a monthly needlepoint club for 2011 but I’m torn about what to do and I’d like you to help me decide by participating in this poll.

My plan is to offer one project per month. The packet will include line-drawn canvas, instructions and, possibly, threads (I’m still debating that one).

One aspect of the club will be color, and it’s use in needlepoint. Each of the color schemes I use will be explored in two of the projects. You’ll not only see the scheme in use, you’ll learn about it and get ideas for how to make this type of color scheme on your own.

Now to the choices:

Little Bargello Treasures – An eclectic mix of Bargello projects, including cupcakes, items for personal accessories, and other shapes filled with Bargello. The emphasis in this will be on different types of Bargello patterns.

Exploring Threads – These will be designs of various kinds in 3″ round ornaments. The emphasis here will be on learning about different types of threads, including some traditionally not used for needlepoint. And on picking the right thread (and stitch) to depict many types of items. The designs will be in rounds, but not holiday-oriented. The 3″ round can be used in many of the Lee and Stirling items, so you can finish them yourself.

Stitches and Quilt Blocks — The endlessly fascinating world of needlepoint stitches will be explored using quilt blocks for each of the programs. Quilt blocks have the advantage of requiring little compensation, so you can learn the stitch, and are an easy way to explore color.

Finishing your Needlepoint

Which do you do with your needlepoint that’s completely stitched? finish it myself as each piece is completed have each piece finished as it is completed wait until there are a bunch of pieces and finish them myself wait until there are a bunch of pieces and have them finished stick them someplace and hope inspiration strikes I will admit, I am no good at finishing. I’m cheap, I stitch many things, and I procrastinate. I do not think I’m unusual in this and I wish I was different. So I’d like to hear from you about what you do and your strategies for finishing.
