I have in my possesion a needlepoint sampler with two pieces of needlepoint in its original case. The case also contains a piece of flax. There is a note written in my granmother’s handwriting that has a ladies name on it with a date. The name is Jane Stit and the date is 1818.It belonged to my grandfather’s mother. He was born in 1880.We also know the piece is from Ireland.I can send pictures and would like to sell the piece. Can you please direct me to the right source.
Thank You,
330-926-0526 Steve Candela
I have no knowledge about older samplers. There are some places to look for that expertise. one would be to look for antique dealers who specialize in samplers. I know there are some. I’d google “antique sampler dealer” to start.
You also might want to look for the book “schoolgirl samplers” in in old issues old a magazine called Piecework. The book is about a specific kind of sampler and Piecework has had many articles about old needlework and you should be able to contact some of the authors.
Finally you might contact the Embroiderer’s Guild of America (http://www.egausa.org). They have a certified needlework appraisal program which might have people who can help you and they also have a considerable historic needlework collection of their own.
Their is also one needlework company, The Scarlet Letter (http://www.scarlet-letter.com/) which specializes in reproductions of antique samplers. The folks at that company might be able to give you additional places to look.
Wish I could be of more help. . .
Keep Stitching,
Janet

Ran across your website.
My mother-in-law did needlepoint and left everyone with a lot of framed needle points. We just don’t have room for them all in our house and we are wondering if there is a place to sell them. I know she bought most of the canvases and thread in europe and had them professionally framed They’re very beautiful and would like to pass them on to someone who appreciates needlepoint. Help!!
Thanks
Tammie
Tammie –
From what I’ve seen the market for stitched needlepoint is not that great.
If everyone in your family has gotten what they would like (and I would include her friends and other family members in this), then I think you have a couple of options.
First, I’d talk to your local ANG or EGA chapter, they might be able to help. Also both the national organizations have programs for needlework appraisers who might be able to help. Although this may be a long shot.
Second, I would submit them to eBay. The prices I see for finished needlework are not high, but they do have a category for finished needlepoint and I often see lovely pieces there.
HTH,
Janet
Janet:
Did I miss your piece on the Quilt squares, that you had model stitchers do? You mentioned something about an e-book.
Joan
I purchased my first canvaswork design (shades of autumn by From Nancy’s Needle) I really dislike the stiffness of the mono canvas that is suggested. Can I use another fabric? I was thinking of maybe 25 count lugana as I’m a cross-stitcher, but i’m not sure if the hole size will work.
I have a framed needlepoint that was done by one of my ancestors in the year 1821 by a Mary Pond.It measures aprox. 18″ x 15″ This was done by her at age 11 during the period of the James Monroe presidency. It is nearing 200 years old and is in mint condition and I would like to find its value. Perhaps you can help? Or… lead me to someone who can appraise it for me…Thank you for your time.
Sincerely
Chet Stentiford
