Creative Plastic Canvas

For many of us the closest thing to a needlework store is the local chain craft store. I’m in the same boat.

Most of the time I grumble about it, thinking I’m not going to be able to make anything really creative from those slim pickings.

Recently I came upon this delightful little box from CraftyPod and it uses stuff I overlook at the craft superstore. It’s made from plastic canvas and inexpensive knitting yarn (Sugar n’ Cream). The lid has three circles of plastic canvas, one on top of the other. It’s embellished with a braided cord.

The sides of the box and lid are made from sheets of plastic canvas which are joined at the edges. This is so easy to do you will delight in finishing projects.

But the real key to the box’s charm is the yarn. Sugar n’ Cream is an all cotton yarn which comes in a wide variety of colors. It’s soft, so it’s easy to use, and it’s cotton so the stitches have great definition and the thread is strong. If I remember correctly the yarn also has some variegated colors.

It’s so much better than acrylic yarn which is about the same price. So the next time you are near the craft store, stop in, you’ll never know what you’ll find.

Thanks so much for this nice write-up of my little box! I don’t know what it is about plastic canvas – it’s endlessly intriguing to me. So glad you liked, too. I love your blog!

I want to do a needlepoint of a barn. I like the Edward Hopper Roofs at Cobb Farm. I can only find embroidery patterns for this picture. Do you know if I can convert an embroidery pattern for working on a needlepoint canvas? Do you have any books to suggest that would be useful for either converting from one kind of pattern to another, or with realistic barns, farms, etc.? Thanks for your help. Barb
