I’m so excited, the fantastic needlepoint teacher Tony Minieri is doing ANG’s Stitch of the Month series for 2009.
Tony can be found teaching at National Seminars, in shops, for guilds, and for shops near his home in New Jersey. The Caron Collection website did a profile of him several years ago and one of his projects, Autumn Scentiment, is on the site in three parts (part 1,part 2. and part 3). He has also contributed projects to Needlepoint Now (available here). One of his best known projects is Stars for a New Millenium.
In the past for Stitch of the Month a new stitch was given every month and the December SOM was a project using those stitches. Tony’s doing it differently and I knew I had to stitch it as soon as I saw it yesterday. It’s a lovely kimono project.
The January entry has the outline to be drawn onto the canvas, as well as the materials list and the guide for choosing your own colors. Starting with the February entry we’ll be getting the stitches.
The design uses three color families and a variety of threads. I thought it would be really neat to do it in a color combination which is typical of kimono. I’m picking teal blue and two shades of hot pink. I found this color combination in a fantastic book about the history and structure of kimono, called, appropriately enough Kimono by Lisa Dalby.
I’m going to put it onto a metallic canvas, either white with silver or white with opalescent. Since I’m going to the needlepoint store in a little bit, the timing is perfect.
What with the CyberPointers President’s Challenge Mystery and all my own stitching, my life is pretty busy. I better go rent some more Netflix.

Are the measurements just the hem and height of the kimono, or include the height and width with the sash?
If I measure just the height and width of the kimono, the total height and width is about 13 by 12 with the sash included.
