There are some stitches that work naturally for this technique. In this patch golden accents in the Color through Gold sampler fall naturally from this stitch. This stitch always uses two colors. Here the accent is gold.
The stitch is called Half-framed Scotch.
You may know about framed stitches, where stitches or groups of stitches are surrounded by Tent or other stitches separating them. This framing can be done in one or more threads and can be subtle or bold. Bolder frames might be wider (Diagonal Gobelin vs. Tent), or colors that are further away from the main color.
Half-framed stitches use Backstitches between units, bridging them and adding an accent.
As you can see from the patch’s picture, the direction of the Backstitch switches between horizontal and vertical. Make these Backstitches in gold. This more subtle combination provides a nice contrast to the Needlepoint Damask in the adjoining patch.
To stitch this patch, use your multi-color thread and your metallic.
Stitch the patch in Half-framed Scotch, below. Use the multi-color thread to stitch the Scotch. Complete a row first then add the Backstitch accents between each pair of Scotches.
Come back in two weeks for a new patch on this great sampler! Next week vintage charts.
