Many teachers and books suggest that you keep a piece of cloth (if you do free embroidery) or canvas nearby to act as something called a “Doodle Cloth.” The idea behind it is that this cloth is a no stress area to practice stitches, to try out color combinations, and to test anything you might want to try before putting needle and thread in your project.
It’s the stitcher’s version of an artist’s notebook. Many artist’s keep notebooks of ideas or sketches, and you may do this to. The Doodle Cloth takes this idea and extends it to give you a place to practice and perfect the stitches you are planning to do.
In a recent article Mary Corbet of Needle n’Thread lists five reasons why you should have a doodle cloth.
