Needlepoint Collage

Sunday, November 22, 2009

Most of the things on my needlepoint bucket list are really huge projects, I probably never will end up doing. But some are small enough I might actually achieve them someday.

Right near the top of that list is learning how to do canvas collage. This technique, which was invented by Rosalyn Cherry-Soliel, incorporates pieces of fabric into the needlepoint.

I love it for many reasons. One is that fabric because it is printed has very different patterns than needlepoint. Another is that the texture of fabric is so different from that of stitching, it’s a wonderful contrast.

Rosalyn’s Crescendo Gallery showcases a number of these pieces and is full of inspirational needlepoint. You can click on the links to learn more about any piece in the gallery.

This came to mind because I got the new issue of Needlepoint Now today and Rosalyn’s article talks about one of the pieces in the gallery, a lovely floral kimono called Serenity. You can start to learn about it on the Web and then go to Needlepoint Now to see sections of the piece in detail.

I really want to try this, but I can hear my DH now saying “Not more craft stuff!” Probably my strategy will have to be to pick the canvas first and then go out and buy little bits of fabric.
