Patches’n Planks – Product Review
Needlepoint is beautiful, there’s no doubt about it. But once several pictures are framed, and pillow are made, there is still stitching to display. Finding products for finishing which make your needlepoint look better than it was unfinished is alwasy a challenge.
So I was intrigued by the lovely wooden boxes and cabinets from Patches ‘n Planks. Available in three finishes (light and dark oak and cherry) they looked like a dream come true. But would they work for needlepoint.
The answer is a resounding and joyful YES!
The company makes a variety of wooden boxes and cabinets including a floss cabinet, recipe box (two sizes) and several different sizes of trinklet boxes. All are available in three finishes and are reasonably priced. For example, the Trinket Boxes, which have square openings ranging from 3.5″ to 10.25″ range in price from $26 to $48.
I tried out one of the Trinket Boxes. It is made of heavy wood, with slightly rounded edges. Perfectly smooth on the outside, it is lovely. The inside is lined with flocked burgundy velvet. The top is quite deep, almost 3/4″ which makes it outstanding for finishing needlepoint. A thin but sturdy Plexiglas top is included as is a finished wooden backing.
The depth of the top means that if spacers can be used so the Plexiglas can be used and the finished back makes the end product elegant.
I was blown away before I even tried to add my needlepoint. I was even more impressed after I had. The entire process took five minutes and did not require glue, hammering or anything except a pair of scissors and my fingers.
I cut out the blocked needlepoint, folded under the edges so it would fit in the opening, added it to the box and put the wooden liner inside. The liner fit so snugly, no glue was needed at all. Even better the liner snapped into place with no trouble at all.
The finished box is sitting on the coffee table in my family room, everyone who sees it (even folks who have seen the stitched piece on its own) is astounded at how great it looks.
The boxes can be ordered directly from the site and are delivered in 6-8 weeks. Satisfaction is guaranteed and the folks are wonderful to work with.
Complete, easy to assemble and beautiful, these boxes are real winners.
