Stitch Elegance came out with this new 100% cotton thread at TNNA in January. It is so incredibly soft I had to try it.

Snipits are multi-colored threads, similar in weight to pearl cotton #5. The threads are mercerized which gives them incredible softness. In fact they are almost the softest cotton threads I’ve ever used. But they are still very strong.

All 21 colors are hand-dyed. They range from semi-solids like Indigo Sea (rich tropical blue) or Tulip (a cheery red) to vivid multi-colors like Marigold (all shades of orange with accents of violet and green). More colors are due out soon.

Snipits come in single strand skeins of 10 yards. It’s easiest to
use if one end of the skein is cut before it is unwrapped (cut at the knot), this gives perfect stitching lengths. If you untwist before cutting, as I did, you might find it hard to get even lengths.

I tested out the thread by making a small ornament of Jacquard Stitch, using a coordinating metallic. It turned out beautifully. The wider stitches in Snipits looked so pretty against the narrow metallic. The colors of the cotton thread had a depth and vividness which is delightful.

With hand-dyed threads there is always a danger of colors being too muddy or with the transitions between colors taking up too much of the length of the thread. Neither of these problems exists with Snipits. The transition areas are short so that the main colors of
the thread don’t get lost among the intermediate shades. The colors have a very nice clarity which will add a welcome punch to many designs.

I also like that the runs of accent colors are short. This makes the multi-colored shades well-suited for smaller designs, such as ornaments. If color runs are long, it can be difficult to use them in smaller spaces.

In short, this is a great thread, worth seeking out. I plan on using the semi-solid colors in upcoming projects and plan on making a whole slew of geometric ornaments using the multi-colored shades. My Christmas tree this year is going to be too cool.
